Dining and Dating

I was looking for a cozy date place that wasn’t too stiff. It had to be perfect for those after-work set-up dinners where you want to make a good impression but be as natural as you can be. Plus, it had to have food good enough to give you that “at-least-I-had-a-good- meal” feeling just in case the date bombed.
While on a dinner date with a friend, I found it! Begging for a fresh venue to catch up and kick back, we went to try Gaudi at Greenbelt. It’s far from the busy resto strips of the area and perched up on its own private nook at the cinema floor. (That would make it slightly free from bump-ins or tsismosa officemates scouting for scoop.)
Needing some conversation lubricant, we got a pitcher of Sangria, P218, and picked on some Chistorra, P210, grilled Spanish chorizo. I swear! Sobrang sarap nung Chistorra—medyo oily lang! And the Sangria was perfect for pre-dinner cocktails.
For dinner, we split a salad and pasta. (I wasn’t too hungry.) Their Ensalada Gaudi, P185, was light and sulit because it was a heap of greens and definitely great for sharing. We chose the Canelones a la Catalana, P220, for pasta. It’s basically a cannelloni pasta dish stuffed with lamb and liver paté in béchamel sauce. It was super tasty and was actually perfect over toasted crosstini bread.
The date was perfect. And although I’m positive sparks won’t fly (Diba, date? Hehe!), at least I had a fantastic dinner with fabulous company.
* Gaudi Bar and Restaurant is located at the 4th Level Greenbelt 3, Ayala Center Makati. You can call 757-2710 to make your own dinner date reservations.

Parang it’s not as good as it used to be when it was really just a cozy neighborhood tapas place along Jupiter. Sayang…

Two words for you: Chuleton Villegodio. This is probably the best thing on their menu and the biggest reason I’d go to Gaudi. It’s a huge steak grilled in the oven and finished off on a very hot, salted plate on your table. Pricey but well worth every peso. Served with sides of sauteed potatoes and grilled bell peppers in oil. If anyone’s familiar with the great Peter Luger’s steakhouse in Brooklyn and Long Island, this is the closest Philippine substitute for it - and that’s saying a lot. =)
