Cake Heaven in a Box

I have a sweet tooth that rivals most kids’. Make me cut ANYTHING from my diet except dessert. I can be a semi-vegan, which is a big deal because I.don’t.like.veggies. I can quit eating chips and drinking anything but water. But tell me to stop eating chocolates and cakes and anything sweet, and you might as well tell me to eat—paper.
So when I found out about Cupcakes by Sonja at the recently-opened Serendra Piazza at The Fort, I immediately rushed over to try it out.
For Sonja, quality comes before everything else. That’s why their cupcakes are baked fresh every single day, using only the best possible ingredients. (For those of you wondering about their unusual schedule, this is why they open in the early afternoon instead of early in the morning.) But instead of their 2-11pm store hours, Sonja is planning to have a 24-hour kitchen. That way, they’ll be able to open earlier.
Cupcakes by Sonja has 21 flavors and counting. (Click here for their complete menu!) However, not all flavors are available every day. But their must-try cupcakes are! Take a peek at their best-sellers, and take your pick.

(Clockwise from top left) Berries & Cream, brown butter almond cake with fresh strawberries and whipped cream icing, P75. Choco Cream Pie, luscious Belgian chocolate cream in Oreo cookie crust and topped with whipped cream and Oreo bits, P98. Melt-in-Your-Mouth Flourless Chocolate Cake, dense Valrhona flourless chocolate with rich, velvety texture, dissolves in your mouth with pure sublime flavor, P98. Bunny Huggers Carrot Cake, very moist cake made with fresh carrots topped with cream cheese frosting, P55.
I got to try all four and I couldn’t decide which one I wanted best! That afternoon though, I was craving the sweetness of chocolates, so I was partial to the Choco Cream Pie and the Flourless Chocolate Cake. But I’ve always loved strawberries so the Berries & Cream got my attention too. And how can you not love carrot cake with whipped cream cheese on top? YUUUUUM!

Would you say Sonja’s Cupcakes are worth the steep price tag though? These look like they’re best saved for special occasions.

Went to check the place out with a couple of friends as soon as I saw this blog entry. Tried a couple of flavors but the winner by a unanimous decision is the flourless chocolate cupcake. Yes, it’s a bit expensive but it’s worth a taste. ‘Orgasmic’ is the only word me and my friends can think of to best describe it.

I was able to try this a month ago, to be honest they’re priced really really steep for a cupcake. Nothing spectacular, but great. I personally loved the Red Velvet Vixen and the Berries and Cream (smelled absolutely divine!)

my brother has been raving about these cupcakes

Consider these cupcakes a nice treat at the end of a long, busy work day. =) They’re not cheap enough to have everyday but when I do have them, they never fail to satisfy. Personal faves are the florless choco, red velvet and the peanut butter & jelly.

November 8th, 2006 at 7:35 am

November 8th, 2006 at 12:54 pm
I love the Red Velvet Vixen. Heavenly! Wanna go back there. And Sonja is friendly too!
November 8th, 2006 at 2:33 pm

November 10th, 2006 at 10:59 am

November 13th, 2006 at 7:03 pm
Cupcakes are cute and good enough to eat..the service?hmmm…they almost forgot my order!I’ve waited for 30 minutes!Ordering 12pcs isn’t too much right? Not enough for them to forget.I hope they get better, customer service is SOMETHING.
November 14th, 2006 at 8:21 am
its just wrong to view these pictures when you haven’t had lunch. tsk. tsk.
November 14th, 2006 at 12:35 pm
wysgal: They ARE somewhat expensive, but I think they’re worth it. And yes, you could save them for special occasions so it won’t be too painful on the pocket
Reesh: I totally agree! I went back last week and had the flourless cupcake again. It was just absolutely heavenly
Aina: Diet schmiet! Hehe
Seriously though. I think they’re worth a try. Just cut something else from your diet
sam: Same here, I can’t wait to try the rest
But I think the flourless cupcake will be my all-time favorite…for now
xtina: So true! It’s lunchtime and instead of thinking of where I wanna eat, I’m craving these cupcakes!
November 23rd, 2006 at 4:20 pm
feel wanna go there now, as in NOW!!

Tried Sonja and service was quite bad last night (9PM), we had to wait for 15 minutes for a box of 4 cupcakes (take out!), plus the fact that they served the customer behind the person behind me first! Good thing the cupcakes were worth the wait. Hope Sonja’s reading this so they can improve
November 24th, 2006 at 3:26 pm
the cupcakes were great but they didn’t even have a bag to carry the boxes with…
November 24th, 2006 at 4:21 pm
the whole Sonja’s concept is inviting.I’m a big dessert fan… but I think I’m inclined to agree…it’s good to have once in a while (highly overpriced)….
November 25th, 2006 at 11:53 pm
can’t wait to eat one, or two, or three! i don’t know… but i like to try flourless choco cupcake.. that’s for sure.. *drool drool*
November 29th, 2006 at 9:33 pm
i tried these cupcakes and was disappointed coz it wasn’t all that good and its highly overpriced. i payed 250 for 3 cupcakes but i realized i could have bought a dozen donuts at Krispy Kreme at that price!!!
December 8th, 2006 at 6:52 pm
kv, you should really try hackleberry’s choco decadent cake if you’re such a chocolate lover. promise the best ever! sobrang yummy ng chocolate i could die. and the price is really affordable. hackleberrys@yahoo.com
December 15th, 2006 at 1:55 pm
i tried the cupcakes also and was a bit disappointed because of the high prices for a very small sizes only. but the peppermint flavored one is worth the try. by the way, my friends are planning to eat at Serendra Piazza next week. which resto is good in terms of taste, affordability, and servings? we tried abe but the prices are quite expensive though the food tastes good.
December 15th, 2006 at 3:08 pm
I’m not so sure about the prices, but I got to sample the steak at Duo and it was delish. (I’m a meat-lover kasi!). If you haven’t tried Brazil Brazil elsewhere, you could try it here–just make sure you wear something loose because you’ll be stuffed afterwards! There’s also an interesting Hawaiian grill there. Have fun!
December 19th, 2006 at 9:16 am
Thanks for the tip. We’ll try to look around the restos first and check out which menu everyone will agree on.

joan: I visisted Sonja’s once after dinner on a Friday, and the line was really long. But since I only ordered one cupcake for takeout, I got mine in a few minutes. And yes, I got my order even before the people who ordered before me. Only because my order was readily available and it was just one cupcake
can’t w8: You really have to try the flourless cupcake! Really, really good
Still my favorite ’til now
Oh, and try the Chocolate Dream too! YUM!
mustshop: Thanks for the tip! How’d you find out about Hackleberry’s?
February 20th, 2007 at 1:56 pm
it IS espensive for such a small cupcake. i think it’s for the A class only haha! i loved the vanilla sunshine (reminds me of my birthday cake when i was little. it’s a no fuss cake. just a simple vanilla chiffon and icing) and carrot cake. their chocolate cupcake is good too because it’s not that sweet. i’ve always wanted to try berries & cream and choco cream pie. Ü
February 20th, 2007 at 2:58 pm
I liked the vanilla sunshine better than berries & cream.
February 20th, 2007 at 4:59 pm
la lohan: You should try the Berries & Cream and the Choco Cream Pie! They’re both super yummy
But my current fave is the second one. Mmmmm, my mouth’s watering now
therese: I haven’t tried the Vanilla Sunshine. How does it taste like?
February 21st, 2007 at 1:26 am
I agree with, Kv. Love these cupcakes hehe.

I was given a cupcake box by Sonja as birthday giveaway by my cousin. Uhmm, i wasn’t too impressed though. The icing was too sweet and without much flavor but sugar. And the cake base was quite dry.

Choco Cream Pie is Divine…
