Affordable Art

affordable-art-01b.jpgI’ll admit I wasn’t much of an art person before. It was rare for me to find a piece that I could relate to, let alone truly loved. I had been to a few museums all over, and I kind of felt like I was just going through the motions, seeing what “had to be seen.” Recently, however, I’ve had a change of art, er, heart. Having been exposed to the local art scene, I discovered that there are quite a few pieces out there that are more my speed—and these are actually things that I could afford!

affordable-art-02b.jpgTwo off-the-beaten-path places I visited were Juan “Johnny” Alcazaren’s studio, and the art space known as Pablo. Johnny’s place holds a lot of interesting, quirky stuff that he made himself—collages of “found” items, music-sheet lamps, even pieces of furniture. I especially liked his whimsical nightlights and his tiny-ass chairs! The chairs, which can sit on the palm of your hand, fill one shelf and go for a mere P500 each—not bad, considering they’re all painstakingly made by hand.
