This afternoon, one of our accounting staffers heard from a former office mate based in Bicol:

“Humihingi siya ng tulong kasi tinamaan sila ng typhoon Reming. Nagugutom na daw ang mga tao doon kasi wala daw nakarating na relief galing sa government. kung may maitutulong daw sana tayo kahit na mga used clothing o kaya mga canned goods malaking tulong na daw sa kanila.”

You and your friends can help by joining the Gawad Kalinga relief teams that will go to Bicol on December 13-15 and December 20-22, and/or donating goods and cash. Click on the jump to find out how.

Gawad Kalinga responds with winds of restoration
Join GK in rebuilding Bicol this December

Super typhoon Reming has left the country, and other news are starting to slowly overshadow the devastation and the urgent and great need of the families in the thirteen provinces (based on NDCC Report, December 4) where Reming unleashed its fury.  Of these 13 provinces, Gawad Kalinga is focusing its initial efforts on Marinduque, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay and Sorsogon.

A.  December Build Guidelines

GK is also mobilizing two big KALINGA LUZON Build activities : December 13-15 and another one on December 20-22.  These will involve GK volunteers from Metro Manila and nearby provinces, GK residents from the various GK sites, students and corporate employees who are willing to spend time with the victims. Some have the signified their intention to stay until Christmas just to be there for those who have lost their families and relatives in the storm.

Build Sites - GK will release by Monday, December 11, the final list of Build sites that people can participate for the two build activities on December 13 to 15 and December 20 to 22.  An average of 30 volunteers will be assigned per site, and we hope to be able to reach all the GK communities on both dates.
Transportation – Volunteers are asked to organize their own transportation to and from the assigned sites for the build on December 13-15.  We leave Manila at 9 PM on December 12 and we leave Bicol at December 14 after dinner.  FINAL BUILD SITES for these dates are the following : San Fernando, Calabanga, Ocampo and Iriga.  We will also send more specific guidelines on what equipment to bring on December 11.
For the December 20-22, we also encourage larger groups to organize their transportation, carpooling is highly encouraged.  However, individuals or smaller groups (less than 10) may also sign up at the GK office if they wish to join the GK buses.  The transportation cost will also be released on Monday, December 11.

Food – GK will be asking for P300 from each volunteer for 3 meals.  Cooking of food will be centralized.  However, we encourage all the volunteers to bring extra canned goods and ready-to-eat food and lots of water to sustain us as we do the clearing and build activities.
Accommodations – We ask our volunteers to bring tents and sleeping bags.  We will pitch tents in the assigned GK sites.  Whenever possible, we will use the existing bathrooms in the GK homes if they are functional.  Otherwise, be ready for anything :)
Volunteers are also requested to bring simple Christmas packs to be shared with families.  These can contain small amounts of rice, canned goods and other needs of the families.

For existing GK corporate partners – A lot of our GK residents are interested to go to Bicol to help, but have no money to pay for their food and transportation.  We ask our corporate partners to allocate a small amount for the transportation and food of such GK residents so that they will not be deprived of the opportunity to also become a giver, not just a receiver.

For the December build, please contact the following :
1.  Registration of individuals/small groups and those who want to sign up in the GK chartered buses : Please contact Eva Monserrat / GK Secretariat at 726-7261 or egmonserrat@gmail.com
2.  Registration of students/corporate employees or others who have their own transportation, please get in touch with Jaja Oquinena at 7267261 or mjp.oquinena@yahoo.com

B.  Relief Efforts

Gawad Kalinga has joined forces with Ateneo De Manila University and ABS-CBN Sagip Kapamilya Foundation for the warehousing, sorting and distribution of relief goods for families.
Priority needs are :
CASH donations
Water and Sanitation Hygiene (WASH) – drinking water, water purifiers, purifying tablets and water containers
Health – medicines, medical teams
Food – canned goods, rice
Non-food items – candles, clothing, blankets, gasoline for delivery vehicles (we have tapped volunteers to lend us their trucks but we need gasoline supply), generators (we need them during the build activities, construction, etc.)
Construction materials – GI sheets, c-purlins
GK Partners who would like to donate goods can course it through ABS-CBN (13 Examiner Street, South Triangle, QC.  Tel. No. 4110846) or through Ateneo De Manila University (Cervini Hall, ADMU Campus, Katipunan).  Please indicate your company/group name and that you are a GK Partner.
ABS-CBN, ADMU and GK will jointly agree on specific communities that it will support for relief goods.  GK warehouses are now set up in Naga City and Daraga, Albay to receive these donations.  GK communities in the region, many of which are isolated barangays,  will also serve as base for distribution efforts.  GK Priority will be these communities as well as nearby barangays.
GK is also accepting cash donations through the following bank accounts :
PESO : BPI Greenhills Branch CA#3101-0976-75

Please fax deposit slip to 723-1603 or email dvmangona@gawadkalinga.org and gk.liquidation@gmail.com for proper acknowledgment of your donation.

Hope you can join us in bringing back hope to Bicol this Christmas season.
