How to Get One of Oprah’s Favorite Things

In case you left your x-ray vision at the gym, these watches are not really stainless steel, they’re acrylic. And that caption reads, “My pal Andre discovered these unisex watches. They’re lightweight, water-resistant, and a terrific present for Father’s Day.”

Andre is Oprah’s hairstylist. We know this the way we know Sharon Cuneta was raised by Yaya Luring, and Nora Aunor once had a doll named Maria Leonora Theresa. (Details like this lodge themselves in our brains in a manner politicians can only dream of. I mean, can you even keep track of who’s pro- and anti-ChaCha in Congress? I can’t. But I know Andre does Oprah’s hair, while Reggie does her makeup. Sigh.)

ToyWatch was a top pick on Oprah’s Favorite Things list, and now those unable to fly to Chicago to look under their seats for freebies have a chance to get them, too. Click on the jump to find out how you can buy ToyWatch in Manila.

Vanity Fair says:

Lucky magazine agrees:

And so does Sophia Bush:

To order, contact Charisse Katigbak at charsyap@yahoo.com or 0917.731.9009. ToyWatch comes in 6 types: Crystal (P8250), Colored (P8250), Oversize (P9625), Mother of Pearl Chrono (P13,750), Sport Chrono (P12,375), and Rock Candy (P15,125 or P16,225). There are different colors available under each type. To see photos of the different styles, click here. Please note that not all styles may be in stock when you order.

Now, for our little commentary…

The Idea of Cheap Chic
The difference between cheap chic and just plain cheap, according to some watch pundits, is the difference between a ToyWatch and a Swatch. Ouch.

Chic is usually equated with luxury, and luxury is equated with exclusivity. Exclusivity is most easily attained through the setting of prohibitive price points, and as anyone running a drug, oil, or cement cartel knows, the price of a highly desirable good is most easily manipulated by keeping a tight rein on production and supply.

ToyWatch has improved on this approach and done its own take on “mass-tige” (mass + prestige) marketing. Its products are priced relatively low—though not as low as the Swatch watches it assiduously tries to differentiate itself from—but are kept in highly selective distribution. Neiman’s and Bergdorf’s, yes, mass market retail outlets, no. Combine this with sophisticated Italian design, and you have a nice profitable niche selling a product that was invented more than a hundred years ago.

But once you’ve been on Oprah, where does the “-tige” end and the “mass” begin? How much accessibility can be tolerated without alienating the Privileged Few? How to find a balance between volume and value, popular appeal and an exclusive cachet? Is affordable exclusivity, ultimately, a myth?

Does it matter? No. Buy something because you love it, not for the brand or the hype. Then you’ll always be a happy shopper :)
