I will be actually be giving seminars this year until the month of November. I usually take a break from teaching during the month of December every year so that I will have more time to spend with my family over the holidays.

I have a Canon A410, will this do for the basic photography seminar?
March 5th, 2007 at 11:49 pm
Hi Sha.
I normally encourage my students to use a film or a digital SLR. But I have had students in the past who used a digital point and shoot and had no diffiiculties in doing the take home assignments.
Your Canon A410 is more than sufficient for my basic photography seminar.
Cheers!

We have a Canon A95, will that be good for basic lessons? If not, I will purchase my own camera.
I am very interested in taking lessons.
March 6th, 2007 at 4:21 am
Hello. I have this camera:
http://www.steves-digicams.com/2003_reviews/fuji_s3000.html
Is this suffice for basic photography sessions?
March 6th, 2007 at 9:28 am
@ Aina & Charlene
I normally recommend a digital or film SLR. If you are on a budget and want value for money, you might want to consider purchasing the Canon 400d.
However, I have had students in the past who have used the Canon A95 and the Fuji s3000. They were able to do the take home assignments without any problems.
Cameras (regardless of its price and features) all share common basic features.
Personally, I am considering purchasing either a Canon G7 or a Canon S3is digital point and shoot.

I’ve been getting requests to give a seminar at Cebu. But I still can’t find someone who can organize the event for me. But I’m hoping that one of my sponsors will agree to a Cebu seminar within this coming Summer.
March 7th, 2007 at 2:34 am
As for my printer, I have an HP PSC 1510, will that suffice?
Which cameras would you recommend and how much is their price range?
March 7th, 2007 at 3:33 am
I am not familiar with the HP line of printers. But it doesn’t matter what inkjet printer you own. The take home assignments do not have to be printed. They are supposed to be submitted in digital format.
Each assignment is projected with an LCD projector and individually critiqued. I know it sounds a bit scary. But most students learn a lot from analyzing each other’s photos.
The only time an assignment will be printed will be during the last seminar session which is on basic color management and inkjet printing. The assignments will be printed during the seminar session for free using the Canon Pro 9000 which is a desktop archival inkjet printer.
Which cameras do I recommend? I’m partial towards the Canon G7 and Canon S3is if you want a digital point and shoot. Or you could consider the Canon 400d if you are after a Digital SLR camera. Price rane for the G7 would be about P35k. I think the S3is a few thousand pesos cheaper. The Canon 400d kit (with lens) costs about P42k-48k.
March 7th, 2007 at 9:44 am
Hi Jo. I’m interested in joining your basic class but I don’t have my own PC. I do have access to computers at the office and at cafes for file transfers. Is there any editing required for photo submissions? I’m asking because I might be hard-pressed to find a PC with Photoshop in it. My own PC at the office only has the starter edition, which is only good for cropping. Also, my camera is a Canon A630.
March 7th, 2007 at 9:51 am
@ She
Actually, you aren’t allowed to edit any of the photos that you submit for assignment purposes. It is preferred that you spend more time getting the shot right so that you will spend less time in front of the computer using Photoshop to correct and error.
The fourth module of the seminar session though is Basic Photoshop. I can provide laptops for partcipants to use during this specific session. One of my seminar sponsors (Ynzal Marketing) loans Mac laptops (Powerbook, Macbook Pro, Macbook) just for that purpose.
Your Canon A630 is more than sufficient for the seminar.
March 7th, 2007 at 11:47 am
OMG! But but but…I’m only available on mondays! WAAAAH.
But I’m glad that there will be classes till Nov!!!
Noob photog hobbyist here!

March 7th, 2007 at 1:26 pm
Hi Jo!
Am really interested in the seminars but I’m not really a beginner so I was wondering which seminar would you recommend. Interested in learning about studio photography since I’ve mostly just done outdoor photography.
Also, is a film SLR okay for the seminars? My camera is a Canon EOS 3000V.
March 7th, 2007 at 1:48 pm
@ Nins
I would recommend the Advance Photography Seminar if you are interested in studio photography. The new schedule hasn’t been posted yet at my seminar website. But there will be an Advance Photography Seminar for the month of May 2007.
However, only digital SLR cameras may be used for the Advance Photography Seminar. This is one of those few times that instant feedback via the viewing LCD comes in handy.
A film SLR though is acceptable for my Basic Photography Seminar.
March 7th, 2007 at 5:20 pm
Hi Jo,
my camera is a Kodak easyshare z7590.. will that suffice?
Very interested in taking your class, but my offic hours end at 6pm, i might always be late
March 8th, 2007 at 1:05 am
@ Morning
I always try to start each seminar session promptly by 630pm. It wouldn’t be fair to those who came on early or on time if I didn’t start on time.
Digital point and shoot cameras like the Kodak easyshare z7950 will suffice. You might not be able to apply all the technical details that will be discussed if you use a digital point and shoot. But I think that a lot of people prefer to use digital point and shoots because they like its simplicity. You could attend the seminar just to learn how to fully utilize your camera.

March 22nd, 2007 at 10:01 am
I recently updated my seminar website.
The schedule of photography seminars from April to August 2007 has already been announced.
http://web.mac.com/misterkodaker/iWeb/Jo%20Avila/Welcome.html
March 24th, 2007 at 11:35 pm
Is there any sort of age limit to who can attend the seminars?
March 25th, 2007 at 12:49 am
Age limit? None. Although I generally discourage those of pre-school age from attending my seminar
LOL!
But seriously, are you inquiring about a maximum age or a minimum age?
The average age of my students ranges from 17 years old and above (as in way abo-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-ve).
March 25th, 2007 at 2:33 pm
Minimum age, actually.
March 25th, 2007 at 3:25 pm
Minimum age? The seminar modules were not crafted for kids - so children of grade school age might have a hard time.
High school age kids? Okay lang. But high school kids are usually uneasy not being around those of their own age bracket. I think this is a reason why I rarely get teen-agers.
What minimum age did you have in mind?
March 26th, 2007 at 1:31 am
15, seeing as how that’s hold I am. Haha.
March 26th, 2007 at 1:31 am
How old, sorry.
March 26th, 2007 at 3:02 pm
Fifteen years old? Okay lang as long as you don’t mind the company of people who are at least college age
April 5th, 2007 at 11:22 pm
hi! don’t you have other venues somewhere south? makati area or alabang. thanks
April 8th, 2007 at 1:56 am
@ Grace
I only regularly hold seminars at my studio in Greenhills. I have held seminars in Makati. But those seminars were specially booked by corporate clients.
April 18th, 2007 at 10:27 pm
I have recently updated the schedules at my seminar website.

hi jo! im very much interested to enroll in one of your basic photography seminar. i dont have a dslr yet.. although i have a digital p&s camera that i am using. Are you strict as to the required camera to use in your seminar for basic photography?
May 2nd, 2007 at 1:24 am
@ Jem
I do have a few students who use a digital P&S when they attend my seminar
The only cameras not allowed are film point & shoot and cellphone cameras
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:22 pm
ok thanks. i was just a little worried because my digital p&s doesnt have manual settings which might be needed during the workshop?
May 2nd, 2007 at 11:15 pm
I will admit that SLR cameras may have a bit of an advantage over P&S cameras in certain shooting situations.
But I do encourage my students to use what they have
May 2nd, 2007 at 11:44 pm
thanks so much! i am looking forward to enrolling in your workshop anytime soon!
May 9th, 2007 at 9:38 pm
There will be a BASIC FOOD STYLING AND FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY SEMINAR at my studio on 10 June 2007 from 1pm to 6pm. Learn the basics of food styling. This is a hands on course that will allow you to food style two dishes (pasta and salad). A guided photo session afterwards will allow you to photograph your creation.
The seminar only has eight (8) slots available.
The seminar fee of P3, 500.00/participant is already inclusive of ingredients, handouts and a certificate of attendance. Participants are required to bring a basic food styling kit, aprons and their own cameras.
Basic food styling kits may be ordered in advance for P1,500.00 or you may assemble one on your own.
The resource person for the food styling component of the seminar is Pixie Sevilla.
A 50% downpayment of the seminar fee (non-refundable) is required to confirm a slot reservation.
The seminar will be held at Unit 114, Gold Building, 15 Annapolis street, Greenhills, SJ.

hi! don’t you have other venues somewhere in visayas particularly in cebu?i’m from mindanao. thanks
May 30th, 2007 at 11:25 pm
I get a lot of requests to hold a seminar in Cebu.
My problem is logistics. It’s hard to do the registration, looking for a seminra venue, promotion, etc. if I am here in
Manila but the seminar will be held in Cebu.
I still haven’t been able to find a events organizer in Cebu who can take care of these tasks for me.
One of my sponsors is willing to loan me a seminar venue. But he recently closed down his Cebu venue. The closest one would be in Iloilo (which I am still trying to work into my schedule :D).

HI Iggy.
Your Canon Ixus 200 is more than sufficient for my basic photography seminar.
The next two-day seminar will be in August.
The one after that will most probably be in October. I am still trying to finalize the date. Just check the seminar website regularly for schedule updates.
I don’t hold seminars during the month of December. That’s the month of my annual vacation from teaching
Cheers!
