New Bombay Furnishings

When it comes to Indian food, it’s either you love it or you hate it. I happen to love it. But I am what you call a closet Indian food fan. I find it hard to admit to my strictly burger/pizza/pasta-eating friends that I am craving for curry with some serious spice and a side of soft chapati. So I was thoroughly surprised when I heard one such friend raving about New Bombay. His claim: this is the real deal—none of the dishes have been watered down to suit the not-so-brave. So with my friend in tow, I decided to see just how brave I am.

New Bombay Chapati

Our authentic Indian meal started with an authentic Indian drink I had never heard of before: the Lassi (P50). Available in mango and strawberry flavors, the Lassi is served in a sizable goblet and tastes like a cross between Yakult and yogurt. It’s pretty tart, to say the least. So don’t be fooled – though it looks the part, Lassi is nothing like the sweet fruit smoothies we’re used to. Meanwhile, the combo of their spicy Samosa (P80) starter and the sweet mango chutney dipping sauce had me holding two thumbs up as I chewed mouthfuls.

New Bombay Dipping Sauces

I also recommend their Mutton Rohan Josh (P180) that’s served ground almonds and cream and their Chicken Makanwala (P150), a buttery boneless chicken dish topped with heavy gravy. Both go perfectly with the Garlic Naan (P40) and the soft Chapati (P20). A word to the wise though—they don’t kid around with their spices so be sure to specifically order the mild version of these dishes if you don’t plan on working up a sweat like I did. But if it already feels like a mini forest fire has ignited in your mouth anyway, not to worry. The Gulabjamum (P80 for 4 pieces), perhaps comparable only to our own leche flan and yemma treats, offers a sweet contrast to all that zing. If you’re up for a little culinary adventure, I say take a trip down to New Bombay.

Yupyup! I actually know the owners, the Khanchandanis… the great thing about new bombay is that it’s authentic indian food and it won’t put a dent in your wallet like Kashmir or Queens would :)super affordable! =) i like their eggplant dish, mutton, and chicken (sorry forgot the name..hehe)

  8. maya Says:

thanks for recommending a good place to eat Indian food. I’m such an irony, I have been to India before but was so scared to eat anything while I was there so I ate mostly chapati, parathas, naans and rottis.. as in puro bread.. bawi na lang ako sa breakfast ng hotel.. i have learned to love it lang lately when I ate sa isang Indian resto sa UK..

  9. sheryl Says:

swagat doesn’t have nice food. I would go to New Bombay in RCBC or the one in front of Sommerset because they are cheaper and it is authentic indian food…. but for the Ambiance i would love Bollywood Cafe in greenbelt! Kashmir in Pasay road is the best too!

I can’t be bothered with anything lately. Maybe tomorrow. Such is life.
I haven’t been up to much recently, not that it matters.
Basically not much happening these days, but eh.

  15. Amarit Says:

It’s nice to know there are now a lot of a Filipino who like Indian food. I didn’t know about Swagat Indian Cuisine and New Bombay before. Anyway for those who would like to try more Indian restos, there is like a little India in UN Avenue, Paco Manila. There are little dining places, and also around 3(or 4) grocery shops. It is near Indian Sikh Temple. You can try Samosa for only 8 pesos each. Lassi I think is 15 pesos. It is in Assad Mini Mart.Only two tables though, because it’s inside the shop. You can try Assad cafe if you want to stay longer and try more delis.

i can never never forget the first time i tried their lhassi. the waiter recommended it saying it was a yogurt drink. we expected something that would taste like a fuzion smoothie. plus my siblings told me it tasted just like taho. i drank it, unpleasantly surprised by its sour milk taste. although it was fun to look at the other people who tasted it. their faces were absolutely priceless.

if you want good indian food. try arya in promenade. their chicken ka-, i can’t remember, i just know that it’s chicken thigh and breast marinated in yogurt and saffron. although i’m not really sure if this is an indian restaurant. it might be persian..well, all that matters is that it serves good food.
