Movie Review: Becoming Jane

I am a huge fan of Jane Austen movies. My two feel-good movies are: Emma (with Gwyneth Paltrow) and Pride and Prejudice (circa Keira Knightley) and I swear that I will end up with someone who is the perfect combination of Mr. Knightly and Mr. Darcy (hmmm…Mr. Darly?). So when I heard about this movie, I was pretty psyched.
I read a couple of previews before I saw the movie though and they weren’t very positive. Mostly they’re peeved (Sorry, that’s Austen creeping in. I am currently writing this review in a gazebo by the garden with a cup of earl gray tea. I wish.) that it strays quite far from its source material. It’s a fictionalized biopic of Jane Austen’s life, emphasis on fictionalized.

But if you see it with this in mind, then I think you’ll enjoy the movie nonetheless. I did. Okay, so maybe it’s been done before (see above titles) and there were moments when I did go “been there, seen that” but I’m a sucker for Regency romances so I didn’t mind that much. Besides, Anne Hathaway was a convincing Austen (albeit a highly fictionalized version). But the real scene-stealer here is McAvoy. He is hot! You actually forget that he played a faun in The Chronicles of Narnia (a character that’s definitely not sexy). Heart that scene where he apologizes in the woods. *Swoon* I’d watch the movie again just for that.

So if you’re a hopeless romantic (like me) or if you have a thing for hot gentlemen in breeches (again, like me), then I recommend you go see this one. Bring an equally sappy gal pal along. It’s definitely a chick flick.

Oh yes, James McAvoy is very, very hot! And as far as I know, the Brits aren’t exactly happy with this film. Anyway, when will it be shown here?
Will it be in all cinemas or just an exclusive, like for Ayala cinemas only?

In addition to the two Jane Austen movies listed above, I’d add “Sense and Sensibility.” Love the lush language and witty dialogue - so many quotables, and one that even manly men like my hubby wouldn’t mind watching over and over (then again, he’s always been the literary type).

Hi Maggie!
I’m a regular reader of ShopCrazy - I like how you guys write. I especially enjoy browsing through your movie reviews since we seem to go for a lot of the same things in a film (hot AND interesting guys definitely included).
Just a teeny, tiny suggestion though: it would help your readers so much more if you always remember to include a brief synopsis. What’s a movie review without one, right? That way your articles will be a lot more informative and at the same time, highly entertaining.
Thanks and keep it up!

Wow. He was the faun?! Now I want to watch this movie. I usually shy away from “period films” but heck, I wanna see him!

I loved this movie too! I’m such a fan of period pieces.
Aside from The chronicles of Narnia, James McAvoy was also in the movie Starter for 10 and Penelope ( I don’t think it was shown here)

History says that “Tom Lefroy love chemistry with her was only a mere “boyish love” and the relation in the movie was questionable. Also, the movie implied that Tom named her daughter becuase of J Austen, but it was really debatable in history whether it came from Tom mother-in-law or from her.”

Do you know a place in here that sells merchandise of J Austen and any collectible books of her? Thanks.
