Beauty Update: Looks for Fall/Winter ‘07
by Cherry Pacheco-UyTrends apply not only to fashion, but to makeup (and hair) as well. They go hand-in-hand so one is not left behind by the other. Every season, designers experiment and collaborate with different makeup looks for their runway shows. From the plainest to the most outrageous looks, I’ve picked three of my favorite. Try them out on yourself and see which one suits you best.
BARE FACE
A very popular look for this Fall/Winter, designers like Alessandro dell’Acqua, Preen, Burberry Prorsum, Vera Wang, Carolina Herrera, and Dolce & Gabbana used this pale look to contrast against their rich collections.

This is a great everyday look for school, work, or play.

TIPS FOR GETTING FALL’S BARE FACE:
FOUNDATION: The key to this season’s no makeup look is to have healthy-looking, glowing skin. Use a foundation that compliments your skin tone and adds a dewy, luminous effect, as opposed to a matte finish. Because the eye, cheek, and lip colors are barely-there and subdued, you should let your beautiful skin take center stage.
For Jasmine, I used Paul & Joe Moisturizing Compact Foundation with SPF 15 (P2150)—delivers a fine-textured finish that’s smooth, supple, and virtually pore-free.

Also try: Paul & Joe Light Cream Foundation with SPF 15 (P1875)—for lighter coverage. It creates a dewy, moist complexion that’s velvety smooth to the touch.

2. Stronger eyebrows are important to anchor this pallid look. Thin or sparse-looking eyebrows might wash you out. Keep eyebrows groomed then fill them in. Try: Paul & Joe Duo Eyebrow Pencil #03 (P950).

3. Pay attention to lashes. It’s not the exaggerated 60’s look that was popular last Spring/Summer, though. Simply curl your lashes, and then use the best dark mascara you can afford. Try: Paul & Joe Wateproof Curly Mascara in Black (P1375).

4. For eye and cheek color, try to play with textures to keep your face from looking flat. If you like to use matte eye colors, then you might want to highlight your cheekbones with a shimmery blush; and vice versa.
CHEEK: For a more sophisticated look, use your favorite bronzer and apply high on the cheekbones to “sculpt†your face, instead of applying it on the apples.
For Jasmine, I used Paul & Joe Face Color Powder #50 (P1100) to contour the cheekbones, then I highlighted with Paul & Joe Duo Face Color #08 Moroccan Orange/Brilliant Orange (P1150) for a warm orange glow.

EYES: Instead of the usual black liner, use a soft brown pencil or eyeshadow to line the eyes. You may add taupe or gold shadow to the lids.
For Jasmine, I used Paul & Joe Eye Color Primer in #02 (P1200) to brighten her eyelids. Then I lined the inner lower eyelids with white eye liner. Try: Paul & Joe Dual Eye and Lip Pencil #03 (P950).

5. Finally, keep lips looking lustrous and kissable. Use lipsticks that have lots of moisture and shine. Then finish off with gloss. Try: Paul & Joe Lipstick N #07 (P1175). Paul & Joe Lipgloss #03 Honey Almond (P1075).
* Hair Tip: Keep your hair soft and relaxed, like you just got out of bed, but still clean and pretty.
==============================
LOUD MOUTH/40’s INSPIRED
Gucci, Diane von Furstenberg, and Roberto Cavalli were among the designers who used 40’s sexy siren Veronica Lake as their muse. Two key factors define this look: black eyeliner (slightly winged), and a red mouth. This look can take you from day to night.

Grey dress from Zara
TIPS FOR GETTING THE 40’s INSPIRED LOOK:
1. From the pale face above, it is easy to transform your makeup to this sultry look. First, line the upper lid with black eyeliner. You may use pencil, gel, or liquid liners. Slightly turn the liner upward. For evening, you may add eyeshadow in a neutral color and false lashes for more definition. Try: Paul & Joe Dual Eye Pencil #01 (black/grey) (P950), dip the black pencil tip in water before applying for a liquid-liner finish.
2. Red lips can be ageing, so be careful to choose the right shade and texture. While matte and deep red lips look bold and sexy, they also tend to look severe. If you are no longer in your 20s you might want to try sheer berry shades, or brighter red-orange colors.
On Jasmine, I used Paul & Joe Lipstick CS N#52 (P1100), from the Autumn Collection Sparkles.
* Hair Tip: Set your hair in large rollers or use a curling iron, then do a sexy side part.
DRAMATIC EYE
This season’s dramatic eye is all about the dark eyeliner combined with a winged smoky shadow. Versace, Michael Kors (smoky grey), Louis Vuitton, and Karl Lagerfeld (eyeliner) focused on the eyes, and kept everything else pale. This is a great look for evening. For the day, you may skip the shadow and go for just the eyeliner on the upper and lower lids, inner and outer and all around. Don’t forget to add a slightly winged tip.

White top: model’s own
TIPS TO GETTING THE DRAMATIC LOOK:
1. Use shimmery (as opposed to matte) eye shadow for a softer, smoky effect. Choose rich tones such as charcoal, purple, dark brown. Try: Paul & Joe Eye Color #20 (P1025), a shimmery charcoal shade.
2. Use a lighter shadow to highlight the brow bone. Try Paul & Joe Eye Color #01 (P1025), a shimmery champagne color.

3. Line the eyes with black liner.
4. Keep the cheeks and lips nude.
* Hair Tip: Keep hair sleek and straight and part in the middle.
* Paul & Joe is available at Rustan’s Makati.

as for the comment earlier about why we follow fall trends even if we do not have fall or winter: it does not mean that we walk the streets of manila in fur coats and gloves, but we apply key elements of the new (fashion) season in our wardrobe as well as in beauty. certain details, silhouettes and colors are in style at a certain point in time. that is why it is called fashion. it is what is in vogue at a particular time (which is usually referred with a specific season.) for example, do you remember metallics at Dolce and Gabbana fall 07 or ruffles at YSL spring 06? it’s just a fashion thing.

I like the looks, but hey– they’re really not for everyone. Just do what you like, no one is forcing you to do anything, right? Im really wondering why people here going all ???? and !!!! and ALL CAPS? I wish people reading this blog for free could be nicer. Peace

My dears, sorry to burst your bubble but it’s highly probable that almost 99% of what you see in the magazines and on the web are Photoshop-enhanced. Welcome to the real world.
September 6th, 2007 at 5:35 pm
There’s a difference between good editing and bad editing. Sorry to burst your bubble.
September 6th, 2007 at 6:07 pm
true. retouching was quite heavy-handed on this bunch of photos.
September 6th, 2007 at 10:34 pm
Oh yeah. I just noticed the photoshop job on the photos, and I agree with the people above. Too much.
September 7th, 2007 at 12:22 am
yes, unfortunately, we live in a hypocritical world. that we have to result to photoshop to showcase the beauty of the model or whatever makeup we have to promote. i agree, photoshop here was overdone. i hope this site would cater more to the needs and dilemmas of real people who lives in the real world.
also, why do we have to always follow the trends of other countries and do what they do? the model is not even a pinay (or a true pinay looking model). its not far to imagine why the styles suit her. why not considering a morena, chinita, or a more typical looking pinay for a model?
no other country has a colonial mentality as much as we do.
September 7th, 2007 at 2:04 am
well, trends are trends. please don’t tell me you don’t follow trends somehow. we live in a globalized world because of advancements in technology. a good idea in one country doesn’t stop there. the whole world listens. so if paris thinks that grey is the new black and people worldwide agreed, then it’s a trend! don’t tell me you never wore metallics, leggings, platforms, skinny jeans, pointy toe shoes, ballet flats, oversized bags and high waist!
September 7th, 2007 at 2:24 am
oh btw maria, i kind of agree with you on using a model that is more applicable to us. you have a point.
i thought long and hard about the colonial mentality comment. i think we have moved past that. i mean so many dark skinned/ chinky eyed personalities have emerged over the past 5 years and most of them have sustained remarkable careers.
come to think of it, i do not think using brazilian models is symptomatic of our “colonial mentality.” i think it is just a trend for models in general. there is a brazilian invasion not only in phils but also worldwide. new york runways used more foreign models than native americans i think. and the new trend now is east european models. so i think the next wave of foreign models who will come here would be europeans and not brazilian anymore.
September 7th, 2007 at 11:15 am
hi guys i really liked those make ups shown and i really wanna try it.. sadly ( i know this will sound kinda funny) i dont know how to put an eyeshadow on!!! coz i dont have eyes like that haha!!! well i have chinese eyes so you know what i am talking about!? where to put those eye shadows haha. anyway i hope someone can post a topic on how to’s in here lol.. thanks keep up th good work..
September 7th, 2007 at 12:34 pm
when i commented about colonial mentality, it has nothing to do whatsoever with the models. i dont even think there is a connection. i just hope that this site feature models who are more like us. applying new make brands on a typical looking pinay. after all, i think this site aims to do just that. i have no problem with what race/ color dominates the fashion scene now. i never correlated colonial mentality with the choice of model. it just so happens that pinays who are chinitas and morenas are the target market of this site and would like to see for themselves if such make up style or trend suits them. many would even compare themselves with the model and doubt if they can pull it through.
again, i never correlated colonial mentality with the choice of model. it was just a statement.
September 7th, 2007 at 1:08 pm
Globalization and advancements in technology do not mean we have to lose our identity and look as Filipinos. Do you mean because we are in this stage, the streets of Makati must be similar to the streets of Paris? Is this part of the evolving world? That we have to look so westernized even if it does not suit us? I am not against fashion trends or whatever is “in”. All I am saying is we follow a certain trend or style because it fits us and not just because. Many would follow the said styles but would not consider their skin type/ complexion. Dont tell me you dont see people walking around or wherever, and roll your eyes because they look funny with their fashion statement. That deep down we think, trying hard.
Also, have we moved past colonial mentality? Is dark skinned really beautiful to the eyes of many Filipinos? Whitening products have been part of the daily regime of many. It has evolved from lotions, creams, soaps, skin bleaching, etc. And now the gluta and meta stuff. Up to the point of injections. Many resort to this to achieve the “mestiza look”. Why? I think because many feel inferior with our very own color and we live up to the ideal and give high regard to such complexion.
September 7th, 2007 at 1:43 pm
westernization doesnt begin with just plain using a non-filipina looking model for a shoot, and nationalism doesnt end there either.
