Also, have we moved past colonial mentality? Is dark skinned really beautiful to the eyes of many Filipinos? Whitening products have been part of the daily regime of many. It has evolved from lotions, creams, soaps, skin bleaching, etc. And now the gluta and meta stuff. Up to the point of injections. Many resort to this to achieve the “mestiza look”. Why? I think because many feel inferior with our very own color and we live up to the ideal and give high regard to such complexion.

again, i never correlated colonial mentality with the choice of model. it was just a statement.

i thought long and hard about the colonial mentality comment. i think we have moved past that. i mean so many dark skinned/ chinky eyed personalities have emerged over the past 5 years and most of them have sustained remarkable careers.

come to think of it, i do not think using brazilian models is symptomatic of our “colonial mentality.” i think it is just a trend for models in general. there is a brazilian invasion not only in phils but also worldwide. new york runways used more foreign models than native americans i think. and the new trend now is east european models. so i think the next wave of foreign models who will come here would be europeans and not brazilian anymore.

also, why do we have to always follow the trends of other countries and do what they do? the model is not even a pinay (or a true pinay looking model). its not far to imagine why the styles suit her. why not considering a morena, chinita, or a more typical looking pinay for a model?

no other country has a colonial mentality as much as we do.
