I *LOVE* mascara… Don’t you?
Mascara is my eyes’ best friend. Along with my other love, the lash curler.
I wear it almost everyday, and always the waterproof variety. I’ve long realized that the non-waterproof ones don’t work around here. No matter how much I curl my lashes beforehand, the humidity will eventually make them go limp. Worse, the mascara will smudge and result in under-eye shadow that I didn’t plan on having.
In the last few weeks, I took my mascaras to the test—to see how waterproof they really are. I used four of my favorites: Fasio, Paul & Joe, Lancome, and Maybelline. I wore them at yoga class, while swimming, cooking, and walking around the block on a rainy day (under an umbrella, of course). And here’s what happened:

LANCOME L’Extreme WP (01 Noir) — P1695
Brush Applicator: The big brush combs out and lengthens each lash. Less clumping.
Asthanga Yoga: Lashes wilted a teeny bit, but still good. No smudge!
Cooking: Not affected.
Walk Around the Block on a Rainy Day: Not affected.
Swim: Lashes wilted slightly, but still perky. No smudge!
PAUL & JOE Waterproof Curly Mascara (02 Brown) — P1375
Brush Applicator: Medium width, brushes out hair to separate and elongate lashes.
Asthanga Yoga: Lashes still perky but wilted a teeny bit. No smudge!
Cooking: Not affected.
Walk Around the Block on a Rainy Day: Not affected.
Swim: Lashes in good shape, with just a bit of wilting. No smudge!
FASIO Power-Stay Mascara 3D+air tech Curl Long (Black 001) — P395
Brush Applicator: Like a small comb. Deposits mascara easily. The fibers really lengthened and volumized my lashes.
Asthanga Yoga: Lashes perky and no smudge.
Cooking: Not affected.
Walk Around the Block on a Rainy Day: Not affected.
Swim: Lashes perky, almost no wilting, and no smudge!
MAYBELLINE Lash Discovery Mini-Brush Waterproof (Very Black)
Brush Applicator: Thin brush applicator makes application neat and precise.
Asthanga Yoga: Lashes perky and no smudge.
Cooking: Not affected.
Walk Around the Block on a Rainy Day: Not affected.
Swim: Lashes perky, just a bit of wilting, and no smudge!
Warning: After swimming with mascara, it was more difficult to remove it even with oil-based eye-makeup removers. It took twice as long. At times, after cleansing, I would still get remnants under my eyes. Those, I’d wipe away with lotion and cotton buds.
I normally go bare-faced when working out, to let my skin breathe. But on days that I run late for yoga class and have no time to remove my makeup, I keep it on and jump into class or the pool. With any of my favorite mascaras on, I feel confident that I will look good even after my workout.

i love maybelline’s double extension waterproof. and for your makeup remover, try the face shop’s liquid makeup remover in a green bottle (like shu uemura! only cheaper). also try the face shop’s cleansing cream fruits mix - yummy smell and moisturizing too! i use it everyday.

October 4th, 2007 at 8:32 am
im using fasio hyper stay the down side is having trouble taking it off…any affordable and effective make up remover?
October 4th, 2007 at 1:43 pm
hi mai-mai. I’ve been using baby wipes to remove make-up. It’s gentle enough to use around the eyelids and eyelashes. It’s not as expensive as the imported make-up removers which come in wipe and towelette form but they’re just as effective. I picked up this tip when Nicole Richie claimed that she never goes to bed with make up on and using wipes is one of her best beauty tools for quick clean ups.

HELP! I wear contact lenses. What would be the best sequence in applying mascara and using an eyelash curler? Should I put on my contacts first… then mascara, then use a curler?
Any advice is truly appreciated. Thanks!
December 4th, 2007 at 3:37 pm
Hi Moca D! If you’re wearing graded contacts, then you would definitely have to put them on before applying anything to be able to see properly. In general, I still prefer to put contacts on first so that I dont ruin the makeup by smudging or getting it wet.

Thank you Cherry! Your tip is appreciated so much!

Is it practical to use at the same time the Fasio curl long ang curl volume?

Is there a mascara that doesn’t smudge or flake but is easy to remove? I’m just not comfortable using make-up removers…
November 3rd, 2008 at 3:51 am
Hi! Can you recommend a colorless water-proof mascara? Is there such a thing in first place. I have my eyelash permed once in awhile and this is needed to prolong it. But I dont like the look of colored mascara on my eyelashes. I wanted something more natural looking, if theres any.
