Movie Review: Disturbia
by Maggie Adan, Editor-in-Chief, K-Zone
People predicted he’d be big. He didn’t disappoint. Shia LaBeouf is HUGE these days. In fact, he’s already being called the next-gen Tom Hanks (sorry, Colin Hanks). As far as compliments go, that’s not too shabby at all. Do I sound like a fan? I am. But even if I wasn’t, I’m sure you’d all agree that the kid’s got talent. I mean, if you can hold your own against gigantic mech robots, you must be really good.
Well, fellow fans, he’s back in this month’s Disturbia, which is supposedly a loose remake of Hitchcock’s Rear Window (great movie, you have to see it). I guess you can call it the teen thriller version of the original. Let’s end the comparisons there. After all, Rear Window is a classic. It starred James Stewart and Grace Kelly. And Hitchcock is Hitchcock. Nothing can compare.

But that doesn’t mean that Disturbia is bad. Far from it. In the movie, Kale is sentenced to house arrest after he knocks a few of his teacher’s teeth loose, when the latter provoked him about his dad’s recent death (bad, teacher!). With nothing better to do, our typical teenager decides to set up a stake out from his house and spy on the neighbors. At first there’s nothing more than your garden-variety suburban scenery—hot bikini-clad neighbor and affairs with the maid. But one neighbor hides a dark and dangerous secret…and Kale finds about it.
And that’s where, my dear ladies, it gets scary. It’s not Hitchcock but it works. The plot is simple (No crazy/silly/huh-inducing twists. Thank Jebus. Don’t you think those are getting lame and old anyway?). It’s a straight-out thriller that has key jump-out-of-your-seat moments. I screamed at certain parts, but I don’t know if that’s a good gauge of how scary the movie is ’cause I’m chicken.

Scratch that, chicken or no, the movie provides good scares. And great news too, there are no gross-out gore scenes (a la Saw…bleagh). Plus, LaBeouf proves he can carry a film and that he’s no flash in the pan—he really has serious acting chops (Yay, Shia!). Bottom line? Watch this movie…’cause everyone needs a good scare every now and then …and, of course, to cheer on Shia! (Yay, Shia!)

I love Shia, he’s so cute. After Disturbia, I was looking forward to Transformers, and then even watched Greatest Game Ever Played. Loved him there too.
