Movie Review: The Brave One

the-brave-one.jpgI think Jodie Foster is a superb actress, even if I find most of her movies hard to watch—The Accused, Silence of the Lambs, Panic Room and now, The Brave One. I didn’t place this movie in my must-see list because I hadn’t heard much about it prior to its showing, but I was excited to see Jodie in another movie ’cause girl can act up a storm!

In The Brave One, Jodie plays a famous NY radio deejay whose life is picture perfect until one night, when she and her fiancé are brutally attacked. Her beloved fiancé dies and she’s left traumatized by the event. But soon enough, girl gets her act together and decides to go all vigilante on the city’s criminal elements’ a**es.

I can’t pinpoint exactly why, but I didn’t find the movie’s plot believable. Terrence Howard (as the detective investigating the vigilante’s crimes) and Jodie Foster are in top form but I just didn’t lose myself in the movie. I didn’t find Jodie’s relationship with her fiancé believable. Watching her in their “sweet moments” together was even harder to watch than the gruesome attack they suffered (which was so gnarly, I found myself cringing in my seat). And there were plot points that just didn’t make sense to me, especially during the investigation. Surely, they would’ve gotten evidence against her…or is their detective work that shoddy? (Or maybe I’ve been watching too much CSI.) And there were some instances where things fell into place all too conveniently. I hate it when that happens in movies. It makes one of my eyebrows jump up to my hairline.

It didn’t feel like a waste of time watching it though, because, like I said, it’s got Jodie Foster and Terrence Howard. Together. Acting up a storm…nay…a tsunami. Those two are captivating in every scene they’re together in. In fact, when those two are on the screen together, you almost forget everything else that’s not working with the flick…almost. But despite their combined thespic talents (which are considerable on their own, but together…whoa!), I can’t get over the plot’s flaws.

Would I recommend you see it? Sure. Like I said, it didn’t feel like I wasted two hours of my life. Plus, Terrence Howard and Jodie Foster do give riveting performances and that, for me at least, is reason enough to see it.

But I’m still keeping my fingers crossed that they’ll someday star together again in another movie that works all around—plot and all.

i like the movie but not loved b’coz the story was amazing although the chemistry between the soon to be husband of Erika and her was not superb, there was no spark between them but I like the love scene, it was sexy. Terrence character was nice although it wasn’t show much maybe because it’s all about Jodie’s revenge! I recommend this to people who like something new. Jodie Foster is one of the greatest actress of all time. From Silence of the lamb to the love scene that I was never thought that she could do it “A very long engagement” to this impeccable performance of The Brave One.

Jodie Foster acts up a storm. That’s how I felt too. But I’d love to see the actress in something totally different next time. Maybe a role that exudes some warmth.

Jodie is a brilliant actress. Loved her since I was 12, but it is really difficult for her to play a significant other to another actor specially if there are sweet scenes. She just can’t do it.
