What do you do when you’ve given up all hope of finding Mr. Right? Will, if you’re travel writer Jennifer Cox, you make use of your connections and look for The One elsewhere—all over the world, to be precise.
This is the premise of Around the World in 80 Dates, a compilation of Jennifer’s experiences as she goes on 80 different blind dates—travelling from Amsterdam to Beijing—in her quest to find her Soul Mate.
Some of her of the men she meets are “Worst Date Ever” material, while a few seem to have potential, but the crux of the story is during Date # 55—when she meets Garry, the man whom she feels is The One. Here, Jennifer has a dilemma: does she give up her search and settle down with Garry, or does she go on and finish what she started, which is to complete 80 dates? After all, if you can meet Mr. Right after 55 dates, what’s to say that someone better won’t come up at date #70?
The novel is really more of a dating diary than a travelogue—there’s not much descriptions of the various countries Jennifer visited, something I was looking forward to. Plus I felt she was going overboard (read: desperate) in her search for Mr. Right, although I also have to admire her for her guts and sense of adventure. I liked how it ended—not too sappy, but perfect given the author’s circumstances.
Around the World in 80 Dates shows us that sometimes, you really cannot just sit back and wait for Mr. Right to knock on your front door; sometimes, you have to go out there and look for him. And if you get to go to interesting places and meet a lot of other interesting men in the process, then more power to you!

Read this book last year and I’ll admit, it’s very enjoyable. It sure gave me some food for thought when I went to Europe this summer
Didn’t meet Mr. Right yet but I do recommend this book.

This was a fun read. I found myself rushing through the last few dates though! Was getting impatient already. I heard this is going to be adapted into a film. Rumors are Renee Z. will star in it.
