BYOB: Bring Your Own Bag and Help Save the Planet!

I cannot rave enough about this new discovery. (Thanks, Meg!) No, it’s not another “I’m not a plastic bag†knock off, but something more purposeful.
I have to admit, I don’t separate my trash, I use a lot of plastic, and yes, sometimes I use aerosol hair spray because of my work. In other words, I know what to avoid to help save our planet, and yet, I still do it. Now, because of one Ichay Bulaong and her Luntian Bags I can do some good for Mother Earth.
Says Ichay: “Luntian Bags are reusable bags made of canvas that come in different designs and sizes. The purpose of the bags is to help reduce plastic bag pollution by using reusable bags instead of wasting plastic ones. These bags are stylish, earth-friendly and carry a message. So for your next trip to the grocery or mall, B.Y.O.B.â€
Luntian Bags come in several designs. They look hip enough for school or for the mall. You can even fashion your own design and have them custom-made. These make great corporate or party/wedding giveaways.

LIVELIHOOD PROGRAM
So you’re looking stylish in your bag while trying to save the planet, but the beauty of it doesn’t stop there. Luntian Bags are products of a livelihood project in San Teodoro, Mabini, Batangas. Each bag is sewn and printed by wives of fishermen and laborers in that town.
WHAT GOT ICHAY STARTED
Ichay writes in her blog: “Last April, I read this Time article and the numbers stunned me — ‘Every year, more than 500 billion plastic bags are distributed, and less than 3% of those bags are recycled. They are typically made of polyethylene and can take up to 1,000 years to biodegrade in landfills that emit harmful greenhouse gases.’â€
“More than the numbers, however, my main takeaway was that we (normal people and not scientists or radical activists) can do something about it — ‘Reducing your contribution to plastic-bag pollution is as simple as using a cloth bag (or one made of biodegradable plant-based materials) instead of wasting plastic ones. For your next trip to the grocery store, BYOB (Bring Your Own Bag).’ Hmmmm, I can do that. And maybe I can get other people to do it, too.â€
“My family and I have a weekend home in San Teodoro, Mabini, Batangas, and my husband and I have always wanted to do something for this wonderful community. So with the BYOB idea in my head, next thought bubble was: Why not have the bags made in San Teodoro?â€
And thus, Luntian Bags was born.
Luntian (l¨²n-tee-an) means green in Filipino.
