Worry-free fun in the sun

beach.jpgBeyond skin darkening, another more significant reason to shy away from the sun is precisely why I advocate using day moisturizers with SPF: the dreaded skin aging. Even stress can’t hold a candle to the sun’s effects on wrinkles, blotchy pigmentation, and skin sagging.

Listen up, beach babes! In a talk given by dermatologist Ma. Lorna F. Frez, MD, she explained that there are three types of UV rays from the sun: UVC, UVB, and UVA. UVC is the most damaging of the three, although we’re lucky that these rays are filtered off by the ozone layer. However, the earth remains a free-for-all for those pesky UVB and UVA rays—the former, the cause of sunburns which may induce skin cancer, and the latter, the culprit behind skin aging.

But you need not put your summer plans on hold for fear of the sun. Go out to the beach, just make sure to wear sunscreen—the right sunscreen, that is. Most sunblocks only protect from UVB, and not UVA rays. And on the off chance that they contain UVA protection, they break down after a while, leaving your skin a walking pile of rapidly aging flesh. It may sound bad, but the good news is, it’s preventable.

If you want a trusty sunscreen, make a check list: 1) Is it non-comedogenic, meaning, it won’t block your pores? 2) Is it oil-free, so it won’t leave your skin as greasy as a pan frying in the sun? 3) Is it water and sweat resistant? 4) Does it feature the Helioplex™ technology, which provides superior broad-spectrum sun protection?

We’ve tried Neutrogena’s new range of sunscreens—the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock SPF 50+, the Neutrogena Fresh Cooling Sunblock Gel SPF 30, and the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist Sunblock SPF 30, which were surprisingly unlike typical sunscreens in the market today.

The Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock, though with a whopping SPF 50+ formula, is quickly absorbed by the skin. You don’t have to look like a human plaster of paris—or worse, espasol—waiting for your skin to soak up the sunscreen.

The Ultra Sheer Body Mist Sunblock SPF 30, on the other hand, spells effortless application. Just spray it on hard-to-reach areas and angles and—voila!—you’re protected from the sun! Just don’t spray it on your face! To apply on your face (all three, by the way, are safe to use on the face), spritz some on your hand, then spread on your face like you would a moisturizer.

Our favorite is the Fresh Cooling Sunblock Gel SPF 30—ironically because it doesn’t feel like you’re applying sunblock. It actually feels as though you’re slathering something as non-greasy and cool as hand gel on your body.

  2. cosmochick Says:

this is very good news! i used to buy these ultra sheer sunscreens only when i’m in the states or hk.

  3. teeyah Says:

Wow. I’ve been looking for sunblock these past few days. I’ve bought L’oreal’s face sunblock but I think I might give this a try. BTW, how does it smell? Coz I was forever turned off by the smell of Nivea’s body sunblock. I was really dizzy after a day of using it. =(

  4. chrissy Says:

Hi, teeyah! these sunblocks don’t have a fruity or floral scent, but their smell reminds me of baby soap—not too overpowering and smells quite fresh in a “fresh from the shower” way. i guess it’s also because its consistency’s not super thick (which is why it incredibly doesn’t feel greasy on the skin).

as for the cooling gel, wait for it to dry a little before sniffing. once it’s somewhat dry, the scent is minty cool in a sort of hand gel kind of way. =)

  5. Nikki Says:

wow! thanks for this! I’m looking forward to try this out! I hate those creamy and super oily sunblock :) Thanks for the nice post

  6. teeyah Says:

Thanks Chrissy! This is so helpful and I’m glad the scent is baby soap scent.
Can’t wait to buy it! =)

  7. coco Says:

is anyone out there using aveeno face sunscreen coz they say its non-greasy but i end up looking like i’ve slathered on baby oil

  8. misadventurous Says:

damn i just bought my summer bottle of sunblock last weekend! (my summer starts early)

question: some of the sunblocks out in the market expire a span of a year lang, so i only buy one bottle each summer tas tapon na.

do these sunblocks have longer shelf life?

  9. ratskeee Says:

ultra sheer smells good. it has this helioplex that claims to be a better protections versus UVA and UVB. shelf life is 2-3 years.

  10. chrissy Says:

hi, misadventurous! shelf life of ultra sheer is about two years, though dra. frez advised to never scrimp on sunblock. always reapply sunblock when you go out to the sun again. according to her, ideally what you buy for this summer should be all used up, as in there shouldn’t be any left for the next summer. but yes, ultra sheer’s shelf life is about two years. =)

  11. fran Says:

how much is the vmv? how big is the bottle? thanks. =)

  12. paula Says:

finally, they’re here na! my mother and i have been waiting for this since our derma recommended neutragena sunblock. :) thanks for the heads up!

  13. kira Says:

try VMV’s Baby Armada SPF 60 for P1399 (2oo ml). its what our family uses, its light and non sticky :)

  14. teena Says:

you must try beachhut sunblock spray..
this is really good. No mess, grease or white streaks. It’s clear. It’s invisible.i hope anyone will post this product here =)

  15. marie Says:

i can’t believe it but the ultra sheer really does smell good and isn’t sticky/

  16. paula Says:

any news on the exact release date of neutragena ultra sheer? been looking for it last weekend in malls but i haven’t seen it anywhere yet. thanks!

  17. Ginger Says:

I have also been looking for the products but cannot find them. If anyone knows where they are available, please advise. Want to buy before my trip on April 26th!

  18. Bea G. Says:

ey ginger, i saw some in watsons, they even have a promo or something.

  19. Samsung Lover Says:

I bought the Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunblock SPF 50+, PA+++.

I have oily and very pimple-prone skin. The sunblock does not have a matte finish so I just dust some powder after 1 hour. It’s not sticky nor it is oily.

I love the texture than my previous L’oreal UV Perfect Sunblock. But I think Loreal has better ingredients because the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer dry touch sunblock does not have any physical sunblock. L’oreal does have (TiO2)
