“Mark” my coffee

When it comes to coffee, I must say I’m more of the unadventurous type of drinker, preferring a simpler latte to the fancier types. But now there’s a kind of coffee I found myself drawn to recently simply because it’s so pretty to behold, and equally lovely to the taste buds.
This is Starbucks’ featured beverage, the new Caramel Macchiato, a strong espresso with layers of flavors, not just the usual blend of coffee and cream.
It might seem like your ordinary sweetened coffee with a fancy name, but the name tells so much about this drink. In Italian, “macchiato” means “marked” or “stained,” which is a more unique way of preparing this beverage. Instead of pouring coffee into the cup to start with, syrup is added to the cup first, followed by steamed milk and foam. Then, a fresh shot of espresso is poured on top to “mark” the foam. What makes it more attractive still is the cross-hatch of caramel drizzle on top of everything else.
