Are you a millennial?

time-styledesign-ss08.jpgAs I was going through Time Style & Design’s press release, I realized that hey, I didn’t know Time magazine had a style issue! It’s like finding out your bespectacled Chemistry teacher actually wears knee-high boots and motorcycle jackets or something.

So, anyway, Burberry and Armani model Agyness Deyn graces the cover of Time Style & Design’s Spring 2008 issue (photographed by David Slipjer). The magazine also features a very interesting story about the new generation of consumers, which journalist Deirdre van Dyk profiles as buyers with sky’s the limit spending habits.

Van Dyk writes, “All around the world, designers and luxury executives are jockeying to appeal to the millennial generation… More often than not, the millennials are more informed consumers [than their boomer parents].” The issue also includes a luxury survey and shows how the millennial generation spends compared to their boomer parents: what brands they trust, where they shop, where they live, how they think about luxury, and more. So, do you qualify as a bona fide millennial? Here are some figures from the survey:

According to the survey of millennials, in the past six months:

• 65% of millennials bought an average of six pairs of shoes
• 59% of millennials bought an average of two pairs of sunglasses
• 52% of millennials bought an average of seven purses or bags

If having bought more than ten kinds of moisturizers in the past six months qualifies as a millennial, then count me in!

    I’m definitely a millenial =)

  2. Moca Says:

    Yup … I guess I’m one too.

I imagine Sophie Kinsella’s heroine Rebecca Brandon is one too.

    Just wondering..

Are Gen X ers considered as millenials too?

Other than by what and how we spend, how else are millenials defined?

  3. mommyice Says:

i don’t know if i should be happy or be depressed after i found out that i’m a millennial..

  4. chrissy Says:

hi, moca! millennials are actually the “gen y” bunch — gen x people are born between mid-60s and 70s, while millennials at around the late 70s to late 90s.

one of the things that define the millennial generation is their spending habits (if you’re quite of a spendthrift, you’re a true blue millennial!), but other factors i’ve read generally include being tech driven (of course), team-oriented, and treating friends as family, among others. =)

  5. Moca Says:

    Thanks Chrissy!

    Good to know. :)

  6. d-advocate Says:

I would’ve thought millenials are defined by the decade/(s) they were born, and not by the characteristics that the majority share (although I would beg to disagree on this). You could be born in the 60s or 70s and still be a millennial.
Also, I think it follows: baby boomers -50-60s babies
    gen x- 70-80s
gen y (aka millennials)- 90s-to the present

  7. teeyah Says:

It’s not exactly a very happy state. Like Rebecca Brandon, she got stuck in debts, although the book was funny, it may not be as funny in real life..

  8. chrissy Says:

d-advocate: i totally agree with your point regarding being a 60s and 70s baby and still qualifying as a millennial. i suppose to quote time’s article, “[the millennial’s] income is lower than that of most boomers, yet core luxury millennials are much more psychologically engaged in luxury than their parents’ generation.” i guess the writer wants to emphasize that despite being relatively new in the corporate world (thus having smaller salaries compared to their more senior co-workers), millennials are actually more inclined to splurge (perhaps even spending more than they can actually afford—thanks to credit cards, maybe).

  9. lali Says:

definitely a millenial. wow! i am surprised to know na di pala ganun ka- popular ang time style and design. i would read it often for the past 4-5 years kasi it’s a fashion mag that knows what it’s talking about in terms of fashion forecasts. this magazine is very at par wioth vogue.

  10. claire Says:

well i guess im a millenial too..

there was a time where i bought 3 pairs of shoe and 5 kinds of bags at the time..

does it becoming a millenial too?

  11. pia Says:

“As I was going through Time Style & Design’s press release, I realized that hey, I didn’t know Time magazine had a style issue!” …. uh, duh!! if you’re anyone younger than a 20-year-old, that’s kinda like a huge fashion faux pax give your by-line?? TIME’s style issue has been around for ages. Sorry for my cattiness, couldn’t resist… Haha! :D

  12. chrissy Says:

pia: hahaha! it’s all right! it was an honest reaction on my part, though! but if i were a fashion editor for a magazine i’d kill myself for not knowing. =P

i’m in my late 20s, so i grew up associating time magazine with the news, which i think most people (save for most of the “fasyon”) still do since the style issue’s released only quarterly (i think). =) but thanks, pia! at least your comment (as well as others’) is a good way of knowing that people do take time to read these blog posts! =)

    I think I am a Millenial ;)

  14. marie Says:

lol 5yrs isn’t ages! Preview’s been around a lot longer than that! :-b imho time’s mistake is making a fashion title using the same name. they made mags under different names like InStyle, People & Entertainment Weekly but why still use “Time”? for ppl in their 30’s & up they would rather turn to the more established authorities in fashion ’cause they would think Harper’s Bazaar or Vogue are the fashion titles while Time is still Time the news magazine. just an opinion! & i wouldn’t know also that time style & design existed if we werent subscribers to time magazine. :-)

  15. cosmochick Says:

so funny me n my friend a fashion stylist (also former fashion editor) were talking abt this n she said “i cant evn name all 20-plus summit titles, what more pa those international ones!” so unfortunately we’re one of those in the dark abt this mag haha!

for me tho if ur a real good n resourceful fashion person ul know how to find the info u need abt trends n stuff without buying these intl fashion mags. all u need is to read all abt the fashion weeks on the net - ny fashion week, paris fashion week etc etc. its so typical pinoy colonial mentality too to have to like know all the intl names, brands, titles, just so u can name drop that u know all these stuff so ul seem more “in the know” dba? thats like such a shallow measure of ur knowledge, parang being book smart vs being IQ smart ryt?

  16. Love S. Says:

I have always known that Time Magazine has Style&Design supplement. And I’m not even a voracious mag reader or a fashion writer. Just an ordinary snoop.

You just have to pick up Time magazine from the grocery sometimes, not just for its fashion news’ worth although you don’t have to read everything, for anybody to be aware of its supplements.

By the way, it also has health & science, business & tech, etc. The infos from these freebies are much way advanced from the slush-slush printed or online itnt’l / local publications mushrooming around.

  17. marie Says:

it’s a good thing that we subscribe to Time! ’cause only local mags are displayed by our grocery cashier that i can browse when i’m in line, otherwise i wouldn’t have access to it like mst ppl. & u save money by subscribing.

  18. lyka Says:

myself thought i’ve been seein Time and other news magazines everywhere in the malls where there are newspaper and foreign magazine stalls even in the provinces. so it’s not that people can only get hold of such reading materials when you purposely subscribe. some new filipino magazines are even harder to find in cities outside manila coz they come late or not distributed nationwide.

some people just really don’t bother coz a certain kind known of a magazine is not of their main interest.
