Manic Monday? Treat yourself to milk tea

by Sharline Bareng, Staff Writer

On Mondays when we still nurse weekend hangovers, we all have our ways of coping. Most of us may turn to coffee for a quick jolt to get us focused on our work, or maybe a good breakfast to keep us energized until noon.

But for those who feel jittery after having too much coffee, tea could be a perfect alternative. Since tea has about half the caffeine found in coffee, it can give us the perking up we need. The UK Tea Council also notes that theanine, the amino acid found in tea, naturally stimulates brain activity called alpha waves. This helps us get into a relaxed but alert mental state. Theanine is also a known mood booster.

Despite all these benefits, more people still turn to coffee because tea tends to be bitter, especially strong black tea. Fortunately for those who want their tea sweet and creamy like a latte or frappe, they can opt for Lipton milk tea.

Before Lipton came up with their line of milk teas, making this drink was an effort. While I had no problem drinking bitter green tea, there were days when I wanted my tea mild and sweet, so I made sure to keep milk in the fridge for my tea fix in the morning. It was all right to make tea like that at home, but concocting milk tea in the office posed some problems: what if there was no refrigerator in the pantry for storing the milk? And soaked tea leaves are messier than powdered coffee in sachets.

In spite of our purist sentiments for tea, we have to admit that powdered milk tea is a brilliant idea. Aside from its easy preparation, Lipton also offers interesting twists to milk tea, to cater to different palates. For those who want a sweet, creamy, and uncomplicated taste, there’s Lipton Milk Tea Original.

For tea drinkers who want to enjoy a creamier blend of milk and tea, Lipton Milk Tea Gold should hit the spot. One cup of its rich and strong blend may even be enough to give you the jolt you get from coffee, minus that jittery feeling.

And if you love undertones of other flavors in your drink, there’s Lipton Milk Tea Vanilla, which, as the name suggests, has a strong vanilla flavor that gives tea a refreshing twist.

So while tea purists may look down at new powdered milk teas as the solution for lazy tea drinkers, we beg to differ. Tea, after all, should be enjoyed—just the way you like it.

Lipton Milk Teas are available in supermarkets nationwide.
