Summer footwear idea: Go ethnic

by Cheekie Albay, Staff Writer

verde_mainGone are the days when the word “ethnic” is used merely to describe tribal people and their obscure rituals. The term has now permeated modern-day fashion, and we don’t mean the use of malong as your normal day outfit. These days, you can find fashionable ladies donning accessories, bags, and dresses that bear that distinctive native look.

Enter Verde, a line of footwear that may look ethnic but are as wearable as any pair of contemporary sandals. Verde sandals move away from traditional designs associated with the term, and instead use bold color combinations and modern designs to look hip and fresh. See them after the jump.

Verde offers espadrille flats or wedges with pretty details such as ankle ties, crochet, and lots of color—making them perfect for summer. Their sandals have soles made of jute rope—the trademark of espadrilles. But Verde gives the boring old rope sole a twist by intertwining different-colored ropes to form a single sole with attractive patterns.

Verde comes up with new designs every month, making only a dozen pairs of each design. They are made with locally sourced materials from our very own Filipino artisans. By buying a pair, not only do you ace the laidback ethnic look, you actually support the local crafts industry.

You can check out their designs at the Verde shop in Robinsons Place Ermita, Adriatico Lane and 70 Horseshoe Drive, Quezon City. For more information, visit verdecity.multiply.com.
