Sean Kingston, the 18-year-old singer-songwriter, responsible for 2007’s biggest LSS (last song syndrome) “Beautiful Girls” is coming to Manila for a free concert! Ayala Malls, Music Management International, MYTYM Watch Shop, Tommy Hilfiger Watches and MTV Concert Series bring cool to your sizzling summer with Sean Kingston live in Manila on April 17 at the Glorietta Activity Center! Shorty will surely take you there!

It’s no wonder then that Sean is quickly becoming a household name with his first single “Beautiful Girls,” a song cross-pollinating on both urban and pop radio stations coast to coast. The unmistakable hit boasts the instant hook of “Stand by Me” which acts like a muse for the song produced by savant J.R. Rotem. Sean, who is the flagship artist on J.R.’s label Beluga Heights, released his debut album Sean Kingston last year via Beluga Heights/Epic.

time-styledesign-ss08.jpgAs I was going through Time Style & Design’s press release, I realized that hey, I didn’t know Time magazine had a style issue! It’s like finding out your bespectacled Chemistry teacher actually wears knee-high boots and motorcycle jackets or something.

So, anyway, Burberry and Armani model Agyness Deyn graces the cover of Time Style & Design’s Spring 2008 issue (photographed by David Slipjer). The magazine also features a very interesting story about the new generation of consumers, which journalist Deirdre van Dyk profiles as buyers with sky’s the limit spending habits.

Van Dyk writes, “All around the world, designers and luxury executives are jockeying to appeal to the millennial generation… More often than not, the millennials are more informed consumers [than their boomer parents].” The issue also includes a luxury survey and shows how the millennial generation spends compared to their boomer parents: what brands they trust, where they shop, where they live, how they think about luxury, and more. So, do you qualify as a bona fide millennial? Here are some figures from the survey:

Now Showing: The Golden Compass

compassposter.jpgI had really high hopes for this one. After being bombarded with numerous LOTR-slash-Potter wannabe movies, I was really ready for another major fantasy flick that would rock the genre anew. It’s not that this was a bad movie, far from it actually. But it fell short of my expectations.

The cinematography and special effects is top-notch. They recreated Lyra’s world beautifully. You really do believe that their parallel universe exists, that’s how good it is. The props and costumes make you feel like their world is as real as ours. I was particularly impressed with The Golden Compass. I want one myself!

The acting is solid, throughout. Newcomer Dakota Blue is a gem as Lyra. She’s exactly right for the part and there’s no doubt that she’s a good actress. She’s scruffy and tomboyish. I love her Lyra’s spunk and petulance. I love her scenes with Nicole Kidman, especially when she’s being stubborn and rebellious. One gripe though: Her accent is so thick sometimes, I don’t understand what she’s saying!

Christmas for Bookworms

If you’re worried about your pocket getting picked at 168, or your favorite department store is just too crowded, then a bookstore may just be the next best place to shop for gifts this Christmas. Here are some recommendations:

christmas-for-bookworms-01.jpgFor your dad: The Camel Club by David Baldacci (P349)
Does your dad like mystery? Suspense? Action? Then you’re in luck, because The Camel Club has all of the above, with a little bit of comedy and romance thrown in for good measure. It’s the story of four men—all eccentric in one way or another (think nerds, obsessive-compulsive types, etc.) who also happen to be conspiracy theorists and believe that the US government is hiding more than what the public believes. When they stumble upon a dead body, they find themselves entangled with Arab terrorists, nuclear weapons, and a plan to assassinate the President of the United States. There are many historical tidbits thrown in here and there, which make the story even more interesting but in no way makes you lose track of the main plot. The twist at the end is totally unexpected but highly satisfying. Overall, it’s an intense read, and if this gets made into a movie, your dad will definitely be one of the first to line up for tickets.
